January, 2026
January is a time for new starts and beginnings. It is also a month to bring awareness to a disease that affects families and caregivers who look after them. January is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. Roughly 750,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s disease and in 2022, it was identified as the ninth leading cause of death in Canada. The Canadian Vital Statistics- Death Database states about two-thirds of deaths related to Alzheimer’s disease that affect Canadians 85 years and older. (Alzheimers-awareness-month stats)
Every January, the Alzheimer’s Society not only supports but leads Canada’s Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. Their goal is to bring forth the voices of not only the individuals who are living with dementia but also everyone involved including the caregivers, families, healthcare providers, and more.
